High school senior Cynthia “Cindy” Elliot is all about the punk rock scene in her town, especially bands like Bikini Kill and Bratmobile. She loves their empowering feminist message, and devours any riot grrrl ‘zine she can get her hands on.

When a popular teen magazine announces their 1991 All American Cover Girl contest where 500 hopefuls will interview for a chance to win a magazine cover and an internship with a magazine’s editor - and a brand new Chevy Camaro - Cindy sees the contest as an opportunity to win freedom from her awful stepfamily.

Even more, she decides that this is the perfect time to take a stand against an institution that she believes encourages girls to mold themselves based on the desires and expectation of a male-dominated consumerist society, rather than to become their true selves.
