First Day of Camp!

The First Day of Camp!

Happy first day of Camp, fellow WriMos!

This will be my first time participating in Camp NaNoWriMo, and much like my first time at summer camp as a child it will be part time and (hopefully!) will not end in tears.

During NaNoWriMo this past November, I finally finished the zero draft of my current project. I've been fixing some of the glaring plot issues since then, and during camp I plan to use my time to give the manuscript a good working-over so I can start getting it to some beta readers for feedback. I will simultaneously be working on a couple of short stories I have in the works that I hope to submit to literary magazines for publication.

I signed up for camp thinking it would be great for accountability and encouragement, and I'm really glad I did. I'm in a cabin of all moms with similar writing ambitions, so we'll be great cheerleaders for each other. What I didn't take into consideration was that my daughter's preschool would be on break for the first week, and then we'll have family in town for a week. Also, my toddler is starting to suggest that he give up his morning nap. This means that a lot of my usual writing times this month will be filled with other things, all of which will be really wonderful, but my goals now feel even more ambitious than when I set them.

I really had the deck stacked against me in November, too. My husband was away with work for the first week, and the day he got back we began two straight weeks of visitors, followed by Thanksgiving. But even with all of that on my plate I managed to squeak out the 50,000 words I set out to write, so I am maintaining hope that I can find time to meet my goals during Camp this month.

Happy Camping, everyone!
